What is Lifestyle Medicine?

Written between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC, the Hippocratic Oath is an oath of ethics taken by new physicians to uphold specific ethical standards…”To do no harm.” Waiting for people to get sick and then trying to make them healthier often can indeed harm them. This is why the focus of Dr. Sal’s practice is to prevent illness from happening in the first place as well as to treat and even reverse chronic disease.

Below are the Six Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Sal uses these pillars with his patients as he helps them with health risk factors, chronic illnesses, or for disease prevention. Together, Dr. Sal and his team create on an optimal wellness program for each individual patient that focuses on these Six Pillars of Lifestyle Medicine:

  • Nutrition

  • Exercise

  • Sleep

  • Stress Management

  • Mental Well-Being

  • Purposeful Living

Patients in concierge medicine enjoy full, 1-hour visits with the physician which allows ample time to gather a complete health history and develop an individualized treatment plan.

Dr. Sal works in conjunction with his team of chefs, nutritionists and a fitness trainer alongside each patient to create a specialized action plan. With such tailored treatment, results are often life-changing!

Nutrition

Eating a diet full of fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, legumes, whole grains, raw nuts and seeds is key to a healthy gut. Whole plant foods are a great way to maximize nutrition and the best way to prevent and treat chronic disease or even reverse it. “Where do you get your protein?” Plants have all that you need for a long, active, quality life.

Exercise

A large part of a healthy life is to include moderate to vigorous physical exercise several days each week. The more physical activity, the bigger the benefit. Even a little bit of exercise is beneficial. Working with certified fitness professionals is an ideal way to get started or hone your current exercise routine. Set an exercise goal for yourself (ie: walking every evening after dinner) and you’ll surprise yourself on how well you do and how fantastic you feel!

Sleep

Human health relies upon sleep for optimal wellness. Brain and gut health are linked to a healthy sleep regimen. Without proper sleep, including deep sleep, we are at risk for many ailments such as low attention span, depression, decreased sociability, insulin resistance, and weight gain, to name a few.

Stress Management

Stress is unavoidable. How we think about it and how we react to it makes the difference on how it impacts our well-being. Often times medicines may help alleviate stress, but there are myriad things we can do for ourselves that help manage the stress and improve overall health. Having a relationship with your health care provider can help determine an action plan for stress management.

Mental Well-being

Making social connections and building relationships along with the other pillars of Lifestyle Medicine help achieve optimal physical and mental well-being. Research has proven that heart rate and blood pressure improve with positive social interactions. Happiness and longevity are directly correlated to a positive social life. Connect with your family and friends, or make new friends and improve your mental well-being.

Purposeful Living

Life is full of choices. Living intentionally by making healthful choices helps the body heal itself. Personal responsibility is necessary for anyone who is interested in maintaining a healthy life. The goal is to minimize health risks and avoid disease in the first place. Take time for self care, be active, drink water, surround yourself with an uplifting community, listen to your body…these are just a few lifestyle habits that help to optimize health.
